Colombia Narino Cartago Casa Vieja GrainPro is sourced from a family owned farm located in the community of Chilcal, in the municipality of La Unión within the department of Nariño, Colombia. Darwin Fernández, his wife and two children own and manage the 8-acre farm, which is called Cartago Casa Vieja. Darwin is a trained coffee cupper and has been farming for more than fifteen years. He is using his coffee knowledge to conduct fermentations trials to improve the quality of his coffee. Darwin uses his own micro-mill to process harvested cherries, which allows for meticulous care in depulping, fermenting, and drying the coffee. In addition to coffee, Darwin also grows plantains, and avocadoes on his farm. Darwin and his family collaborate with an exporting company called Lohas Beans to gain access to technical support for best agricultural practices. The partnership has helped to improve quality, increase earnings from coffee sales, and strengthen the family’s livelihood.
